The cabin bag with a different shape

Air India's economy cabin limit is 55 × 40 × 20 cm, and the shape is worth noticing because it differs from the low-cost carriers. It is wider at 40 cm but shallower at 20 cm than the common 55 × 35 × 25 cm standard used by IndiGo, Air India Express, SpiceJet and Akasa. A deep 25 cm trolley that clears IndiGo can fail Air India on depth, while a wide flat bag that is tight on IndiGo passes Air India easily. If you fly both, measure against each. The 7 kg weight limit is the same; note that some older guides still show 8 kg, which is out of date. The personal item, a handbag or laptop bag that rides under the seat, is commonly published at 40 × 30 × 20 cm max; a few sources also cite a weight cap of around 3 kg, so keep it light. Domestic Air India economy includes 15 kg on base fares, a policy in place since May 2024, rising to 25 kg on the top Flex fare. The middle tier sits between 15 and 20 kg depending on which source you read, and the fare-family names themselves differ across sources since the merger, so treat the figure printed on your ticket as final.

The big shift sits on long-haul. Air India moved US and Canada routes to the piece concept from 5 June 2025, with UK and Europe following from 17 October: Economy Value gets 1 × 23 kg, Classic and Flex get 2 × 23 kg, and Business gets 2 × 32 kg. Gulf and many Asia routes stay weight based, roughly 20–30 kg by fare. That single piece on Value fares surprises flyers who remember two free bags on every US ticket, so check your fare family before you shop for a second suitcase.

This changes how you pack. On a two-piece fare, two bags of 23 kg each is fine, but one bag of 30 kg pays overweight even if your second bag is nearly empty. Balance the weight across pieces, keep each under 23 kg, and stay under the 32 kg single-piece ceiling. What excess baggage costs

At domestic airport counters, the commonly quoted rate is about ₹600 per kg plus GST, with some sources citing ₹500–750 by route. Prepaying online through Manage Booking is commonly about 20 percent cheaper than the counter, so weigh your bags at home and buy the extra kilos before you reach the airport. On US piece-concept routes, an extra bag runs roughly USD 200 online to USD 250 at the airport, and an overweight piece about USD 130. The student scheme: 10 kg extra, booked direct

Air India launched its current student scheme in December 2024, and it beats the old route-specific offers: up to 10 percent off the base fare, 10 kg of extra checked baggage and one free date change, on domestic and international bookings in Economy, Premium Economy and Business. It is limited to full-time students, aged 12–30 for international travel, and the discount must be selected while booking direct on airindia.com or the app; carry your student ID or admission letter (plus student visa where applicable) to check-in, because staff can ask for proof. On US piece-concept routes, students are reported to keep 2 × 23 kg even on Value fares, but confirm that at booking rather than assuming it. Zamzam and how Air India differs from its low-cost arm

Air India's current official position, stated in a customer-care reply of 29 June 2025, is that one factory-sealed 5-litre Zamzam container flies free as a separate checked piece outside your baggage allowance, for Haj and Umrah visa holders on flights from Saudi Arabia to India. It never travels in the cabin and should not be packed inside a suitcase. From any other origin, the container counts within your normal allowance. Because the free-and-extra position is visa-conditional and rests on customer-care wording rather than a published rule page, confirm it at check-in, especially around Hajj season.
